Surfacing Object
Project Summary
I carved and sculpted a block of polyurethane prototyping foam into a smooth, contoured object with one defining edge which wraps around the entirety of the shape. It was a meticulous study on the refinement of a mass-produced surface and involved a process of carving, filing, and sanding followed by applying coats of resin, primer, paint, and clear coat with countless hours of sanding in-between.

Over the course of three weeks, refining the shape and sanding out small imperfections after each round of primer and paint started as a mindful activity, and ended up bringing out the deepest perfectionist in me. Had there not been a deadline, I feel like I might've refined this surface for the rest of my life. In some cases, the tiny imperfections so glaringly obvious to me might not come across to anybody else, and it's healthy in any project to know when to stop. Overworking a design can be more detrimental than beneficial, as in this project when I would sand away an imperfection, another one would appear with the next coat of primer.
